Kevin Slowey dominated the Brewers this Sunday June 29th, giving up just 3 hits en-route to his first major league shutout. Slowey, who turned 24 years-old just over a month ago, has been on fire recently. Over his last 3 games, he’s pitched 21 innings and given up only 1 earned run, while striking out 19 batters and walking only 2. All this is helping to propel the Twins into the playoffs in a year that was probably viewed as a time to re-load for the postseason in 2009.
Slowey is proof that you don’t need to throw 94+ mph to be successful. With all the hype surrounding young arms like Buchholz, Chamberlain, Kershaw, etc, pitchers in the mold of Kevin Slowey often get overlooked. With an absurd K:BB ratio well over 6, Slowey is looking dominant, despite having an a fastball that averages just 89.7 mph.
The Twins can be very dangerous. With Slowey, Scott Baker, Francisco Liriano waiting in the wings, and the promise of Nick Blackburn, the future is bright in Minnesota.
